The Port of Corinto is taking a significant step forward in its modernization with the commissioning of new, high-tech port equipment, acquired through a partnership with companies from the People's Republic of China. This will strengthen the port's logistics capacity and boost Nicaragua's international trade.
During an operational tour, Nicaraguan authorities, along with the Chinese ambassador, oversaw the commissioning of four RTG cranes with a capacity of up to 41 tons, designed for the efficient handling of containers.
These cranes can stack up to six rows and lift cargo to five levels, performing between 20 and 25 movements per hour, significantly increasing the port's productivity.
“We are very pleased to be able to share this good news with the Nicaraguan people and with the people of the world who work with Nicaragua in trade and investment; strengthening our capabilities in this strategic alliance with the people and government of the People's Republic of China and with the major companies of that sister nation. We are moving forward hand in hand to improve and expand our services to our people” said Laureano Ortega, Presidential Advisor for the Promotion of Trade, Investment, and International Cooperation.
The Port of Corinto Modernizes its Infrastructure
The new equipment includes four stacker cranes and modern industrial scales with a capacity of up to 100 tons.
“In this way, we are making progress in building a true logistics hub for our country and for the rest of Central America. With these capabilities, the Port of Corinto maintains its capacity to handle vessels of up to 50,000 tons in this first phase".
"But we are working with the Chinese company CAMCE so that, in the second and third phases, the port can handle vessels of up to 150,000 deadweight tons; this will represent an exponential advance in port operations and in connecting Nicaragua with the rest of the world” explained Óscar Mojica, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.
This equipment has been supplied by companies such as Jiangsu Rainbow, Yantai Jiajia, and SANY, consolidating a strategic cooperation that drives infrastructure development in the country.
“I am very delighted and impressed by all this progress in the new areas, as well as the arrival of new equipment. I believe this further demonstrates the unity and determination of the Nicaraguan government".
"This port is very important for trade between China and Nicaragua because it is located on the Pacific side and will be closer to China. Although we are two very distant countries, we are very pleased that Chinese companies are helping in the development of this important port” added Qu Yuhui, China’s ambassador to Nicaragua.
With these improvements, the Port of Corinto strengthens its capacity to handle multiple vessels simultaneously, thus responding to the growth of foreign trade and positioning Nicaragua as a competitive logistics hub in the Pacific.
